The city that never sleeps will bear witness to a historic celebration of heritage, unity, and diversity. This highly anticipated event, “Immigrants Are Us: The (G)eneration Project,” will be proudly hosted by Lorna Harris, an executive producer, cultural advocate, and a cherished member of Staten Island’s community. Prepare to be captivated and inspired as the vibrant tapestry of New York City’s cultural landscape takes center stage in an event that promises to ignite your senses and touch your heart.

This remarkable occasion pays heartfelt tribute to Staten Island participants from all branches of the U.S. Military. Through engaging conversations and collaborative art experiences, they will discover their shared bonds and common experiences. This day of unity aims to encapsulate the enduring spirit of both immigrants and veterans, fostering connections that transcend backgrounds and origins.

Guests will be treated to music played by the Guitar Ensemble and a patriotic Color Guard performance from the talented Susan E. Wagner High School JROTC Color Guard students. Well-known and active in the Staten Island community, Navy Veteran, Mr. John McBeth is the keynote speaker. A light brunch, courtesy of Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, will be served.

At the heart of this groundbreaking event is the (G)eneration Project, an innovative initiative that introduces the concept of (G) Status, spanning from the early pioneers marked as G-0s to the families who have established their roots for up to G-600. This revolutionary framework goes beyond mere chronology; it symbolizes the depth of generations' presence in the U.S., creating a profound narrative that chronicles our shared migration history. Attendees will embark on a journey of self-discovery, gaining a renewed appreciation for their collective heritage and the stories that define us.

With over 40 million immigrants weaving their stories into the vibrant fabric of the United States, the profound impact of immigration on our society stands undeniable. In New York City, a city celebrated for its rich tapestry of cultures, a staggering 38% of the population is made up of foreign-born individuals, contributing immensely to a dynamic and evolving social landscape. These immigrants also constitute a remarkable 46% of the labor force, showcasing their essential role in shaping the economic backbone of the nation.

"The Generation Project is an opportunity to learn and celebrate the contributions of immigrants that have and are serving in the Armed Forces. Through the Generation Project we can learn the beauty of diversity and as well how the military branches are changing throughout the years. This project is important to me because I currently proudly serve as the daughter of immigrants and as a Staten Islander in the Army Reserves as a Military Police Specialist."  Yesenia Mata,  Executive Director La Colmena

“We are honored to be hosting the (G)eneration Project’s tribute to Staten Island’s diverse Veteran community. The Museum is here to support the public and the telling of these important stories." Janice Monger, Staten Island Museum President and CEO

Mark your calendars for an unforgettable day of celebration and camaraderie on Saturday, November 11. This event promises to be an immersive experience that bridges the past, present, and future.

Prepare to be moved, enlightened, and inspired as "Immigrants Are Us: The (G)eneration Project" promises a day where cultures unite, stories intertwine, and heritage reignites. Join us in celebrating the boundless spirit of immigrants and veterans, as we craft a brighter, more connected future together.

This event is made possible by a DCLA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

(G) Project at Snug Harbor's 3rd Annual Porch Plays Festival

Join us for the third annual Porch Plays festival featuring performances and activations by Women’s Playwright Collective, James Scruggs, Sparrow, Staten Island Urban Center, Mayah Burke, The (G)eneration Project: Immigrants are Us, and more!

WHEN: October 1 | 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

WHERE: Cottage Row near Cottage C

ADMISSION: Free | Registration requested here

Porch Plays Festival (Porch Plays) is a free outdoor showcase of original work by socially engaged and diverse artists working in theater, dance, music, and storytelling on the porches of Snug Harbor’s historic Cottage Row. This festival centers the work of artists from historically marginalized communities, including local and emerging artists and grassroots community groups.

Porch Plays celebrates the role of porches and stoops as unique transitional spaces that encapsulate both public and private life. As such, they are informal meeting grounds for families, neighbors, and friends. The porch played an essential role as a communal space in American society dating back to the 19th-century and has seen a renaissance in the age of COVID-19.

This year’s festival, curated by Lina Montoya (La Isla Bonita Festival), Shawnakay Salmon, and Melissa West, explores the complex and layered notion of migration. Migration is defined as the process of movement from one country, place, locality or geography to another. Many species of animals, including humans, migrate as an act of survival in response to changing environments and other conditions. The act of relocation can be temporary and recurring—such as the annual migration of Monarch butterfly—or it can be permanent. There are many cultural, social, environmental factors that shape the experience of a community impacted by migration.

Through performances and art activations, Porch Plays artists will investigate these ideas, utilizing the symbol of the butterfly, to inspire new works in theater, dance, music, and spoken word that activate the porch as a space for contemplation, celebration, and civic dialogue.

Event vendors include: Intuitive Insight, Michelle Swiney Hair, TrippinOutfitters, Captain Dude’s Emporium, SidePony Jewelry, Hart Candles, Zence, The G(eneration) Project: Immigrants Are Us

Porch Plays is made possible with the generous support of Con Edison’s Arts al Fresco initiative and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, with additional support from the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation.

Join Us on Thurs, Aug 19th at 7PM EDT for "What's Your (G) Status?" Staten Island Edition Virtual

The (G)eneration Project is a public art campaign proposing that we are ALL immigrants of different generations – G-0 born elsewhere, G-1 first-generation born here and so on – so that we may see ourselves in each other, and each other in ourselves.

At the (G) Pop-In, the public is invited to visit C.H. Booth Library to experience the installation, learn how to determine their (G) Status, and to hear about why the mission and initiatives are so relevant to the landscape of immigration.

From July 24th until September 30th, visitors can go in-person to the C.H. Booth Library located at 25 Main St, Newtown, CT 06470 to create an impromptu artwork on a (G) Project-designed card, record a video to share their stories, and pose for a portrait. Alternatively, virtual visitors can participate directly on the (G) Project website www.gproject.org.

Open Hours at the C.H. Booth Library

Immigrant Heritage Week Workshop

Immigrant Heritage Week Workshop

During Immigrant Heritage Week, St. Mary's Episcopal Church in West Harlem will host a ground -breaking event for Harlem school children, their families and the general public. This interactive event will launch a national art campaign by the Harlem Arts Foundation and immigrant artist Harlem resident Edward Hillel.

Participants will engage in a dialogue to determine and record their (G) status in order to acknowledge and appreciate that in the United States. Today, more than 40 million people living in the U.S. were born in another country. In New York City, 37% of residents are foreign-born. if we can all see each other by the number of generations (G) we have been in this country: G-0’s are born elsewhere, G-1’s are first-generation born here, G-3’s are third-generation born here and so on, then our similarities will far outweigh our differences and we can begin to consider each other as equal.

Through this project we hope to build and expand a dialogue between Americans from all walks of life, in order to begin to recognize ourselves in each other and each other in ourselves. we are ALL immigrants.
